NITI Ayog launches updated version of website

Updated portal dedicated to project India's energy security statistics over next three decades through 2047

BS Reporter New Delhi
NITI Aayog, government's key policy advisory body, today launched the updated version of its website dedicated to project India's energy security statistics over the next three decades through 2047 under various scenarios of policy implementation.

The website, India Energy Security Scenarios (IESS), is meant to act as a tool for building long-term energy scenarios by generating the demand and supply options.

The end demand-supply numbers are generated under different combinations of efficiency and technology adoption in demand sectors and development of energy resources of the country in the supply sectors.

"This tool is a fun way of learning the complexities associated with energy planning. It builds on three Gross Domestic Product (GDP) scenarios based on the actions taken by policy planners - 7.4%, 6.7% and 5.8% GDP growth scenarios," NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Aravind Panagariya said. He added the launch of the updated version of the tool could help the government workout the framework for the National Energy Policy.

Sashi Mukandan, BP regional president and country head for India, who was also present on the occasion, said the tool will allow assessment of alternate policy options and cut down on import dependence and green house gas emissions.

The latest version builds on the initial version of the IESS 2047 launched by the erstwhile Planning Commission in 2014.

The website has been developed in collaboration with the government of UK and research institutions including The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Prayas and Centre of Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP).
