Bihar Cabinet Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi quit his post late last night after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked him to resign, hours after he was sworn in.

Many eyebrows were raised when Manjhi was appointed because his hide and seek with the long arm of the law in Bihar has been an open secret in Patna. Several people wondered how he was ever appointed in view of his case history.

Sources in the chief minister's office said Manjhi quit in view of the controversy over his alleged involvement in a racket involving granting of irregular recognition to teachers
