Nmpt Handles 5.4 Mn Tonne Cargo In Q1

The New Mangalore Port (NMPT) has handled 54,97,571 metric tonnes of cargo during the first quarter of 2003-04 as against 52,26,996 metric tonnes for the corresponding period of last year, thus registering a growth of 5.18 per cent, New Mangalore Port Trust sources told Business Standard. The target for the period was 52,78,000 tonnes and hence the per centage variation over target was 4.16 per cent.

The number of vessels handled during the first quarter were 216 compared to 203 the previious year.

The total cargo exported was 24,64,193 metric tonnes for the same period and the imports were 3033378 metric tonnes. The huge jump in the import of crude oil for the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) and the rise in handling of MRPL products has led to the increase in NMPT traffic. There was a 319.14 per cent increase in the handling of crude and 96.36 per cent increase in handling of products.

 

However there was no handling of cement in bags this year compared to 1808 metric tonnes for the first quarter last year.

The pig iron handled decreased from 31,714 metric tonnes during last year
