No evidence of money laundering in Cobrapost expose: RBI

ICICI, HDFC and Axis Banks are accussed of offering to convert clients' black money into white

Reserve Bank of India today said it has found no evidence of money laundering in the Cobrapost scam. Cobrapost – an online portal had exposed employees of top three private banks – ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank offering to convert clients’ black money into white last month without coming to the notice of the regulator and other bodies.

K C Chakrabarty, deputy governor, RBI today said, “There is no evidence on (cobrapost). There was no transaction.”

He however said the regulatory issues around know your customer and other business norms are being looked at and if necessary RBI will order corrective measures.   
 

He also said that RBI is undertaking thematic review in 34 other banks following the Cobrapost expose.
