Higher education regulator University Grants Commission (UGC) has said it has no information available about the operations of Amity University in Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
The UGC, in a reply to an RTI query, said Amity University has been established by an Act of state legislature of Uttar Pradesh as a private university and empowered to award degrees as specified under section 22 of the UGC Act with the Approval of Statutory Councils, wherever required.
RTI applicant Y S Kumar has asked several questions from the UGC pertaining to operations, fees, admissions and other management issues of the Amity Business School.
UGC, in its reply dated December 22,2008 said, "Inspection of the UGC as per requirement of the UGC Act, 1956 and regulation (Establishment of and Maintenance of standard in private Universities) regulations, 2003 for ascertaining academic and physical infrastructure of a University is yet to be carried out in case of Amity University Noida."
Not getting satisfactory reply, Kumar approached Central Information Commission (CIC) where the UGC said that since Amity University is created by an Act of UP Assembly, state information commission would decided whether it is covered under the RTI Act or not.
"At present, UGC has no information available on Amity University and therefore no information can be provided," Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi mentioned in his order while dismissing the plea.
