As a cadet at the National Defence Academy, Jaswant Singh of Jassol (as he was known then) was once leading a patrol in the region around the SindhuDurg fort built by Shivaji in the 17th century. While exploring the scrub forest there, the patrol got lost. Anyone who has been in the Army knows that for a cadet to get lost is a fate worse than death. It began raining, it was pitch dark and some of the young soldiers began to cry in despair. Singh, however, kept his wits about him, took his brood back to the camp and served out his punishment sentence (though not cheerfully)
