The Central excise collection in Northern Zone of Central Excise and Service Tax has registered 26 per cent growth in the first five months of the current fiscal year over the corresponding period last year. The central excise collection in the period has touched Rs 242.43 crore as compared to Rs 192.89 crore in the corresponding period of 2009-10, clearly showing sign of recovery for the manufacturing sectors.
However, the service tax collection during the period has gone down by 12.16 per cent. The Department has collected Rs 227.97 crore upto August 2010 as compared to Rs 259.53 crore.
Speaking to Business Standard, Central Excise and Service Tax (Chandigarh) P K Sirohi said, “The positive trends of rising collection have been witnessed ‘across the board’ in zones of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. However, the collection in Chandigarh was negative as it has registered fall of about 59 per cent during the first five months of the current fiscal year, declining from Rs 76.77 crore in the last fiscal to Rs 31.67 crore for the current financial year.”
Further, the collection in Punjab zone-comprising Ludhiana is 459 per cent (from Rs 10.73 crore to Rs 56.41 crore) followed by Chandigarh (II) zone is 82.09 per cent increase (from Rs 50.76 crore to Rs 92.43 crore) and 13.12 per cent growth in Jammu & Kashmir (from Rs 54.74 crore to Rs 61.92 crore).
The upward swing in excise collection in the region has been in tune with the national trend.
