At a time when India is planning to significantly add to its nuclear power capacity, an Indian has been elected the next president of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

Shreyans K Jain, the chairman and managing director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India and Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam (Bhavini) - the only two companies authorised to build nuclear plants in India - has been voted as the next president at the WANO meeting taking place in Chicago.

A release from WANO described Jain as the "architect of India's nuclear power programme". The presidentship is an honourary position with a two-year term.

Set up in 1989, WANO was a post Chernobyl formation aimed at improving safety and reliability nuclear power plants across the world. The organisation has over 400 member commercial nuclear units from over 30 countries.
