The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), co-promoted by the finance ministry with the mandate to involve the private sector in training 500 million people by 2022, is planning to set up 28 Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) across verticals.
“Currently, 27-28 SSC proposals are in the pipeline. We hope to create these over a period of time,” said Dilip Chenoy, chief executive officer of NSDC.
It has already incorporated six sector skills councils in automotive - called Automotive Skills Development Council, energy, retail, private security, media, entertainment and animation, and IT and ITeS.
The function of NSDC would be to support the funding requirement of SSC and represent in project implementation. Each SSC would have its own governing body, he said.
There is a huge skill shortage in the unorganised sector, in nutrition and hospitality. “We aim to train 37 million in the unorganised sector, 35 million in the automotive sector and 33 million in the construction segment,” he added.
So far, NSDC has approved 36 projects, which include 30 companies and six SSCs. It has committed a funding of Rs 1,016 crore since February 2010 to train five million people. NSDC has identified 20 sectors to train 150 million people by 2022.

City-based TalentSprint, a professional training company, today entered into an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Society for Knowledge Networks (APSFKNW), which operates Jawahar Knowledge Centres (JKC), to offer skill development programmes to rural and semi-urban graduates.
TalentSprint has already partnered NSDC.
Under the letter of agreement (LoA), around 1,000 rural and semi-urban graduates would be nominated by APSFKNW per year to undergo skill training at TalentSprint, Santanu Paul, chief executive officer of TalentSprint, said at the inauguration of its Employability and Skill Development Centre, here.
The centre will offer a three-month course and train 260 students per batch. The course fee is Rs 45,000 for the urban students and Rs 25,000 for rural students. It has tied up with 50 companies for placement.
“We hope to train 500,000 unemployed youth by 2020,” he added. TalentSprint has two training centres in Andhra Pradesh at Hyderabad and Anantapur and one in Tamil Nadu at Chennai.
The company has received Rs 10 crore funding from NSDC. It has raised Rs 7-8 crore from its promoters and angel investors, Paul said.
