National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC), country’s largest power utility, is likely to set up power plants in Nigeria and Sri Lanka, a top NTPC official said.
“Proposal is being pursued with the Federal Government of Nigeria for setting up coal and gas based power plants in Nigeria and sourcing of gas for NTPC’s plants in India,” NTPC Chairman and Managing Director R S Sharma said yesterday after his visit to 648-Mw gas-based power plant at Jhanor, about 100 km from here.
Two 250-Mw coal-based power plant in Trincomalee region in Sri Lanka will be set up for which site is being identified and a joint venture Ceylon electricity company is under finalisation, Sharma said.
NTPC is exploring possibility of setting up new coal power project, taking up R&M of old stations and also sourcing of field in Kazakshtan, he said.
It is also pursuing coal blocks amongst NTPC, RNRL, SAIL, NMDC and CIL for sourcing coking coal and thermal coal from abroad for which International Coal Venture Pvt Ltd was incorporated on May 20 this year.
The Joint Venture (JV) will explore various opportunities in Australia, Mozambique, Indonesia and Canada etc, Sharma said.

Set up in 1975, to play a major role in the power sector, NTPC has redrawn power map of India which has an installed capacity of 30,644 Mw through 15 coal and seven gas-based and for joint venture power stations.
NTPC plans to be a 75,000-Mw plus capacity by 2017, Sharma said.
Projects having a capacity of 17,930 Mw are under various stages of implementation and the company will achieve a target of 50,000 Mw by 2012, the NTPC chairman said.
Capacity mix of 2012 includes 40,000 Mw from coal, 8,000 Mw from gas and 2000 Mw from hydro power, he said, adding that NTPC is coming up as a strong player in hydro power.
Sharma said as part of multi-pronged growth strategy, there is multi pronged approach to capacity adoption including greenfield projects, browned expansion, joint ventures and acquisition.
By 2017, NTPC will have 75,000 Mw capacity mix consisting of coal 53000 Mw, gas 10,000 Mw, hydro 9,000 Mw, nuclear 2,000 Mw and renewable 1,000 Mw, he said.
NTPC is also providing consultancy services in engineering, project management, operation and maintenance of power plants to clients within and outside India, Sharma said.
