India and China would need nuclear power to meet their energy needs while tackling with Climate Change, UN Climate Chief Yvo de Boer said today.

"If you look at countries like India and China...which are highly reliant on coal I really don’t see us coming to grips with Climate Change at a global level without nuclear energy playing  a role," Boer who is director of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC), told journalists here.

He did not, however, rule out the need to have safe disposal methods. "But nuclear energy can only play that role if we can deal with issues of safety, if we can deal with issues of waste and if we can find people that actually want one of these things in their backyard," he added.

"And those are critical factors whether you go to China, India, Japan or this country (US)," he said.
