Oil prices slide below $53 in Asian trade

Oil prices declined in Asian trade today despite prospects that the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) might cut production to prevent further decline in the market, dealers said.

At 0850 hrs New York's main contract, light sweet crude for February, remained at 19-month lows trading down 51 cents at $52.48 a barrel.
