With the full backing of the UPA government, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday sought more forces to clamp down on protestors and enforce a curfew. Even as a section of the state Congress wants to see the young chief minister go, Abdullah showed no signs of yielding but focused on resuming normalcy. He admitted the need for a political process but made it clear that no initiative can be taken before normalcy is restored.

Abdullah’s biggest support came from Congress president Sonia Gandhi. In a signed article in the party mouthpiece, Gandhi said, “I understand there are elements with ulterior motives that are instigating these attacks. These elements must be identified and brought to book.”

“Jammu and Kashmir is a political situation. It needs political handling.”
