The opposition parties today attacked the government for its economic policies saying it was doing precious little to control the rising prices.

Initiating a discussion on the Appropriation Bill, 2010 in the Rajya Sabha, Ramdas Agarwal (BJP) said people are suffering due to increase in prices of all commodities but the government was not sensitive to the needs of the people.

"The government is not ready to bring down the prices though people are suffering," he said.

Without naming SP and RJD, he questioned the role of some of parties during the cut motion in Lok Sabha, saying their stand was influenced by extraneous considerations.

Agarwal also referred to the IPL controversy and asked why no action was taken earlier against the team owners.

Shantaram Naik (Congress) said that a "parallel economy" was going on in the IPL and it has to be investigated thoroughly.

He sought introduction of the direct tax code bill at the earliest and full funding of some central schemes as states often express their inability to fund such schemes.

Naik also wanted the government to make it sure that all the SEZ developers gave an undertaking that they would employ only local people in their projects.

Moinul Hassan (CPI-M) referred to the "unprecedented" price rise.

He said 50 per cent of the farmers are in a debt trap and asked where the stimulus package has gone.

The CPI(M) member said there was "inherent structural imbalance" in the budget and said it benefited the corporate houses.

Hassan also criticised the functioning of the IPL saying there was indiscriminate tax evasion.

Supporting the Bill, he asked the government to check economic mismanagement.
