The discussions in the state legislature witnessed the opposition benches blaming the government for being unable to lift 5 lakh metric tonne free foodgrains from the central granaries offered by the Union government under the food for work scheme.

Senior BJP leader Eknath Khadse pointed out that while the state government had sought 50,000 metric tonne of foodgrains under the scheme, the Centre sanctioned 5 lakh metric tonne from the central granaries.

The state government was required to bear the cost of transporting the foodgrains from the central granaries for dispersal under the scheme.

Khadse pointed out that while the state was unable to pick up the foodgrains claiming a paucity of funds, more than Rs 3,500 crore in sales tax arrears remained to be still collected.
