The Orissa government will oppose the stand of states like Karnataka and Maharashtra, the beneficiaries of the controversial Polavaram project at the next hearing on the project in the Supreme Court scheduled for November 22.

The state government will also apprise the apex court on the violations committed by the Andhra Pradesh government of the guidelines given by the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal.

"We held a preparatory meeting to finalize the strategy to be taken by the state government for the next hearing on the Polavaram project on November 22. States like Karnataka and Maharashtra being beneficiaries of the Polavaram project are supporting the project but we will oppose the stand taken by these two states. We will also raise objections to the recommendations made by the Supreme Court appointed Gopalkrishnan committee which had suggested lowering the height of the dam for the project”, said Suresh C Mohapatra, principal secretary (water resources).

Earlier, a joint memorandum submitted by the expert teams of Orissa and Chhattisgarh to the Supreme Court appointed Gopalkrishnan committee, had raised objections over the manner of implementation of the Polavaram project before the apex court appointed committee.
