Though Osmania University is the hotbed of Telangana agitation, its engineering college located in the heart of the campus is seeing one of the best placement seasons.
IT companies Infosys, Wipro Technologies, Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS) and Accenture have made 478 job offers, the highest-ever, to the students of Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE) during the ongoing premium company recruitment drive.
The companies even advanced the placement to the first week of December in view of the agitations. Normally, this starts around the last week of December and stretches to the first week of January.
This year, Cognizant gave the highest 179 offers, followed by Wipro Technologies with 140, Infosys 122 and debutante Accenture making 37 offers. Of the 478 offers made, students have accepted 390 offers and rejected 88. These students stand a chance to appear for the interviews of other companies.
Last year, 408 job offers were made. TCS, which offered the highest 134 offers then, was conspicuous by its absence this year. In all, 26 companies visited this season. The students have one more semester to go before joining the ranks.

Nasscom, the industry body, had earlier asked the companies and the colleges to go for recruitment only in the second semester of the final year. This was seen as a mechanism to contain the glut in the workforce and also to keep the students focussed on their academics till they finish their course. OUCE students have now completed the seventh semester and have one more semester to go. The students will graduate in June.
Cost to company
The average cost to company offered this season is Rs 4.2 lakh per annum, which is Rs 20,000 more than last year. This year Morgan Stanley has offered Rs 10.8 lakh to two students from the computer science electronics (CSE) stream. Microsoft, which earlier offered summer internships to some students, has selected six of them and also some students from CSE. The company is offering Rs 8.5 lakh per annum. Automobile major Maruti too has selected nine students from the mechanical engineering stream. Capital IQ, Persistent System, Deloitte and JP Morgan are among the companies that visited the campus this year.
OUCE placement officer V Umamaheshwar said core companies would also come for recruitment in January. “The process will go on till June,”' he said, adding the salaries improved slightly compared with the last two years due to the slowdown.
The college has 320 BE and BTech students, 220 ME and MTech and 60 MCA taking the total students to 600. Of these, 564 have registered for placement.
The college also offers a dream job option where students appear for the interview of a particular company of their choice. They will drop the present offer if they get one from their dream company or continue with the existing one.
Ramam Atmakuri, centre head and VP, Cognizant (Hyderabad), said companies look at multiple factors like academics, soft skills, and participation in group activities before making the offers.
"We tell the students not to neglect their final semester after receiving the offer. Also, they should not see the campus recruitment drive as the all-end of engineering course." He said the company would take up recruitment in more colleges but did not divulge the manpower requirement.
