Intense pressure finally seems to be working on Pakistan. The country has shown its intent to improve relations with India, even when it comes to dealing with those accused of planning and executing the 26/11 terror attacks.
While India did not explicitly seek custody of some of the 26/11 accused during the foreign secretary-level talks, a senior government official said Pakistan itself indicated that it was “seriously interested” in getting convictions against those who were involved in the multiple attacks in Mumbai 19 months ago. Earlier this week, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao held discussions with her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir on a host of issues through which bilateral ties could be improved.
“It wants to prevent further incidents,” a senior government official said, while adding that New Delhi was ensuring that the gravity of what happened in Mumbai was not lost. The official added that New Delhi is trying to impress upon Islamabad the need to act against those fanning terrorism against India.
India has also demanded that action needs to be taken against those targeting Indian companies and citizens in Afghanistan.
