A bandh call given by a traders' organisation to protest the introduction of the value-added tax (VAT) regime evoked partial response in Delhi today, with some shops in wholesale markets remaining closed, while those in residential colonies operating as usual. |
Many business establishments in the Chandni Chowk area, Azadpur vegetable market and 40 wholesale markets of commodities and oils kept their shutters down, in response to the one-day nationwide bandh call, given by Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal. The bandh was supported by the Confederation of All India Traders (CIAT). |
Most commercial centres near residential areas were open. A representative of the New Delhi Traders' Association said it had yesterday issued a circular to its members to keep their shops in markets like Connaught Place and Khan Market closed. |
