Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar asked the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to imbibe corporate culture and utilise its idle capacity in a financially lucrative manner.

During his first visit to the FCI headquarters here after taking over the food and public distribution ministry, Pawar stressed the need for greater autonomy to the Corporation in its day-to-day functioning.

The FCI Act, 1964, provided for autonomy to the FCI in all its activities to function as a commercially viable and socially responsible organisation that was able to plough back and add to the government's equity. FCI officials told the minister that they were in the process of finalising a Vision 2020 document.
