Per Capita Income Surges In Delhi, Dips In Gujarat

While Delhi continues to surge ahead of other states in terms of per capita income growth, the one-time prosperous states like Gujarat have registered a decline, according to an analysis of advance estimates of the last five years by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

The per capita income in Delhi increased by Rs 1,130 to touch Rs 25,162 in 2000-2001 from Rs 24,032 in 1999-2000. In 1998-99, per capita income in Delhi was Rs 22,977 and Rs 22,326 and Rs 20,189 in 1997-98 and 1996-97, respectively.

Gujarat and Rajasthan, however, showed declining growth rates. In Gujarat, per capita income dropped to Rs 12,975 in 2000-01 from Rs 13,022 in 1999-2000. In Rajasthan, the per capita income declined from Rs 8,272 in 1999-2000 to Rs 8,088 in 2000-01.

 

In overall terms, the analysis reveal a sharp deceleration in the all-India per capita income, with the growth rate declining from 4.4 per cent in 1999-2000 to 1.8 per cent in 2000-2001, and recovering to 3.5 per cent in 2001-02.

Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry contributed significantly to the meagre growth of per capita income in 2000-01. Per capita income in Andhra Pradesh rose from Rs 9,318 in 1999-2000 to Rs 9,697 in 2000-01. It was Rs 8,531 in 1996-97, Rs 8,214 in 1997-98 and Rs 9,018 in 1998-99.

The per capita income in Kerala rose from Rs 8,987 in 1996-97 to Rs 10,712 in 2000-01. In 1999-2000, it was Rs 10,107. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, the per capita income increased from Rs 12,504 in 1999-2000 to Rs 12,954 in 2000-01. The most sustained increase in per capita income, however, has been recorded in Pondicherry where it rose from Rs 13,468 in 1996-97 to Rs 20,879 in 2000-2001.

The per capita income rose by Rs 984 during the last one year. Among the north-eastern states, Assam witnessed an increase in per capita income from Rs 5,978 in 1999-2000 to Rs 6,157 in 2000-2001. In Manipur, per capita income rose by Rs 235 at Rs 7,479 in 2000-01 from Rs 7,244 in 1999-2000. In Meghalaya, the per capita income rose from Rs 7,826 in 1999-2000 to Rs 8,118 in 2000-01. The per capita income in Tripura rose from Rs 6,604 in 1999-2000 to Rs 6,813 in 2000-01.
