The plan for establishing an independent regulator for the coal sector is seemingly on track. The government is positive on appointing the regulator by March 15, Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said here on Monday.

Once the proposed regulator is established, it will bring an end to CIL’s monopoly over the sector, especially in the determination of the price mechanics. The regulator will require the approval of the Union cabinet as well as Parliament before it comes into being.
