Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday inaugurated the new Assembly-cum-secretariat in Chennai. The complex has been built at a cost of Rs 450 crore.
The complex, on the Omandurar Government Estate, was conferred the LEED-Gold certification earlier this week. LEED for ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’ is an internationally-recognised building certification programme for green buildings in India, run jointly by the Indian and US Green Building Council.
“With data from the LEED, we have realised that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will be the first certified green building in the world,” said Deepa Sathaiaram, head of En3, the green consultants for the project.
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly complex will be the largest certified green government building in India and the second government building to get the certification.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi was also present.
