Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stressed the need for adopting the principles and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi for a better future. Singh was speaking at a public meeting, organised to mark the culmination of the re-enactment of the Dandi march, on Wednesday.

Singh said, "Mahatma Gandhi shook the foundations of the British Empire with one pinch of salt, which helped us get independence."

"Even after these many years, Mahatma Gandhi's ideals still inspire us. The Mahatma had seen several dreams for the country. To turn the Mahatma's dreams into a reality, it is very important that we adopt the principles and ideals propagated by him," he said.

The prime minister also announced certain developmental projects in Dandi.

"Dandi occupies a very significant position in the country's freedom struggle. The Centre will construct a heritage road connecting Ahmedabad and Dandi. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi and his fellow 78 marchers would also be built in Dandi," he announced.

Announcing a package for the Sabarmati Ashram, Singh said, "The central government would give a grant of Rs 10 crore for the ashram, which would be utilised for upgradation of this important centre of the freedom struggle. The central cultural ministry would co-ordinate with the Gujarat government, and ensure that the initial work is completed by October 2."

Speaking on the occasion, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said: "Gandhiji spread the message of truth, nonviolence, justice and freedom, throughout his life. The great success of the re-enactment of the Dandi yatra shows that Mahatma is still alive in our hearts. I thank and congratulate all who have participated in the yatra, especially the participants from foreign countries."
