Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the 92nd conference of the Indian Economic Association (IEA) at the city-based KIIT School of Management on Sunday in the presence of the state chief minister Naveen Patnaik.
The three-day conference will be held from December 27-29 this year. Five broad central themes have been selected for this year’s IEA conference.
These are teaching and research in economics in India; Global economic crisis and the Indian Economy; Economic Geography and Development; Structural Reforms and Agriculture and Aspects of development with special reference to Orissa.
Each of these themes is further divided into sub-themes, which may give an idea about the particular areas of interest pursued by an individual researcher.
About 3000 delegates along with their family members would be participating in this conference. The conference is one of the largest gatherings of academicians, economists and researchers in the country. The conference will promote personal contact and mutual understanding among economists from different parts of the country and will provide them an opportunity to discuss problems of common interest.

Among the distinguished speakers who will address the delegates at the conference include Sukhadeo Thorat, chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC); B B Bhattacharya, vice-chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU); Arjun K Sen Gupta, Rajya Sabha member and chairman, Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi; Abhijeet Sen, Member, Planning Commission and Sudhakar Panda, chairman, Orissa State Finance Commission to name a few.

Indian Economic Association (IEA) established in 1917 is a registered body of Indian Economic professionals which aims to provide a forum for debate and discussion of theoretical and policy oriented issues of economic science. The IEA organizes annual conferences, special seminars and lectures by eminent persons of the profession.
The IEA, which is a member of the International Economic Association, currently has more than 3000 members – both individual and institutional.
