Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation of the North-East centre of the Indian Statistical Institute at Tezpur in Assam on July 23.
The centre will be set-up on a 25-acre plot given by the Assam government at a cost of Rs 150 crore, sanction for which had been given by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is the chairman of the ISI Council, ISI director Bimal Ray said.
After attending the ISI Council meeting, where Mukherjee was present, Ray said that chief ministers of all seven states in the region have been invited to the ceremony.
The new centre, to be headed by Prof Sushama Bendre, will help create a statistical database of the Northeastern states, the director said.
The PM will also inaugurate a PG diploma course in statistics on the same day, the ISI director said.
The Northeastern centre of the ISI is already functioning temporarily from the Tezpur university.
Another new campus will be opened in Chennai at an identical cost of Rs 150 crore, Ray said.
