Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda yesterday called for eternal vigil against divisive and disruptive forces saying they had become active with the support of forces from across the border. Speaking at a function after giving away the 1994 Ramkrishna Jaidayal Harmony Awards here, Gowda exhorted non-governmental organisations to supplement efforts of the government to maintain communal harmony. Stating that Indias pluralistic society was undergoing social transition, he said this transition process gave rise at times to certain fractions in the name of religion, region or caste. Gowda warned that such frictions should not be allowed to be capitalised by divisive forces and said that NGOs and voluntary bodies should take active part in spreading the message of unity among the people. Stressing the need for maintaining vigilance against the designs of disruptive forces, the Prime Minister said masses were gradually learning to fight terrorism and added that the menace could not be fought without peoples support and an active role played by the media.
