Polling for 11 Assam L S seats begin amidst tight security

Polling for 11 Lok Sabha constituences in Assam began today amidst tight security to decide the fate of 121 candidates, including 9 women, in the second and final phase.

A total 14,708,852 electorate, including 7,583,085 men and 7,125,767 women, will exercise their franchise in 15,772 polling booths, election office sources said.

Prominent candidates in the fray include Union Minister B K Handique from Jorhat, controversial Congress MP from Tezpur Mani Kumar Subba, former Union minister Bijoya Chakraborty of BJP from Guwahati, BJP state unit president Ramen Deka from Mangaldoi.

The other frontrunners are former Congress union minister and prominent tea community leader Paban Singh Ghatowar from Dibrugarh, former student leader and sitting AGP MP Sarbananda Sonowal from Dibrugarh, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's brother and sitting mp from Kaliabor Deep Gogoi and AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal from Dhubri.

 

Eight sitting MPs, six former MPs and five sitting MLAs are in the fray.

The constituencies going to polls are Tezpur and Lakhimpur with 15 candidates each, Barpeta with 14, Nagaon and Mangaldoi with 13 each, Guwahati with 12, Dhubri and Dibrugarh with 10 each, Jorhat and Kaliabor with 8 contestants each and Kokrajhar with 3 candidates.
