The special economic zone (SEZ) at Positra in Gujarat, which is a pilot project for 11 other SEZs in various other states, would become operational by 2003, according to Union minister of state for commerce and industry Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
The other states that are keen to set up SEZs are Maharashtra at Dronagiri, Tamil Nadu at Nanguneri, Andhra Pradesh at Kakinada, Madhya Pradesh at Indore, Karnataka at Hassan, West Bengal at Kulti, Orissa at Paradeep and Gopalpur as well as Uttar Pradesh at Bhadohi, Kanpur and Greater Noida.
Rudy, who was in Ahmedabad on Saturday, said the Positra SEZ project is on schedule and all the relevant formalities have been completed including international tie-ups for investment.
