Even as the largest communist party of India —the CPI(M) — has snapped ties with it, the Congress has found a new friend in the world’s biggest communist party — the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, during her ongoing visit to China to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the CPC for better co-operation between the two parties.

Gandhi will meet Xi Jin Ping, the vice-president and a standing committee member of the CPC Politburo. Ping is considered one of the top Chinese leaders and his meeting with the Congress chief is of great significance, says Congress spokesperson Veerappa Moily.

The Congress had signed a similar MoU with the African National Congress (ANC) a few months ago. Such agreements ensure institutionalised interactions in different areas of common interest. he Congress chief left for Beijing today with her son and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Minister of State in the external affairs ministry, Anand Sharma. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have been invited by the CPC to attend the August 8 opening ceremony of the Olympics.
