A day after getting a breather from the Supreme Court in a case of 2002 post-Godhra riots in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a movement called 'Sadbhavana Mission' to strengthen social harmony and brotherhood in the state. As a part of this mission, Modi will observe a three-day fast starting from Saturday, September 17, 2011 for unity and brotherhood in the state.

Coming down heavily on his critics, Modi, in an open letter to the citizens of Gujarat, Modi emphasised on unity and brotherhood in the state and acknowledged the responsibility to strengthen unity in the social life. "The real strength of our country is its unity and harmony. It is our responsibility to strengthen unity in our social life," Modi wrote in the letter addressed to the people of Gujarat with reference to SC's judgement delivered yesterday.

Modi, who has been constantly facing heavy criticism from the different segments of society including political parties and social analysts, lauded the apex court's judgement on Jakia Jafri's petition and termed it "an important judgement regarding the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat."

He also made it clear that the Supreme Court's judgement came as a blow on the face of those critical of him and his government.

"One thing is apparent from the Supreme Court’s judgment. The unhealthy environment created by the unfounded and false allegations made against me and Government of Gujarat, after 2002 riots, has come to an end," Modi stated. "...one thing is certain that the credibility of those who have been spreading lies and defaming Gujarat has come to its lowest ebb," he added.

Referring to the sustained growth and development that has taken place in the state post the 2002, he mentioned that the state has not spared any effort to march towards peace, harmony and progress even amidst false propaganda, lies, conspiracies and allegations against state government.

Having been relieved from one of the serious-most allegations on him, Modi announced his initiative of peace, unity and brotherhood and start working to enhance the 'dignity of Gujarat'.
