The Department of Posts, Government of India, will open 40 mail business centres (MBCs) in the Tamil Nadu circle.

The department has already opened 10 MBCs in the state, in addition to the eleventh centre that was launched in Trichy on Monday.

Addressing mediapersons at the inauguration of the MBC here, K Ramachandirann, postmaster general (mail and marketing), Tamil Nadu circle, said the MBC concept had gained popularity at the Chennai airport area, Coimbatore, Erode and Salem. "A second MBC at the Chennai Park Town will be unveiled in two weeks," he added.

In the central region, headquartered at Trichy, railway mail service countries like Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Karur and Villupuram have been selected for the creation of MBCs by the end of this fiscal, he said.

"Although personalised letters have diminished quantum-wise with the advent of Internet and mobile communication, the corporate mails' volume has increased substantially," Ramachandirann said.

In Tamil Nadu, about 2.5 million ordinary letters are handled every day, of which the Chennai city alone accounts for 1.3 million letters. Around 1.15 lakh registered letters are handled every day in the Tamil Nadu circle, in addition to over 93, 000 money orders and 16, 000 Speed Post packets.

The new concept of Business Post and Logistics Mail have also caught on in the state, he added.
