Visakhapatnam Steel Plant could not sell steel worth Rs 450 crore during this fiscal due to the power crisis. VSP is the largest seller of billets and rounds to the steel rerolling mills in Andhra Pradesh.

In view of the power shortage, about two-thirds of the steel rolling mills in AP had shut shop while production in the remaining mills dropped by more than 50 per cent. This impacted the sales of VSP, said TK Chand, director (commercial), VSP, and president CII-Visakhapatnam.

Some of the steel plants producing captive power were ready to supply excess power to the state grid, but the government was imposing penalties on captive power producers on production of excess power, he said.

To encourage the steel industry in the region, CII-Visakhapatnam is organising an international conference on steel and related activities here in February. Under its corporate social responsibility, the zone would develop 200 single teacher schooling during 2013, he said.
