Power-Gen To Focus On Foreign Funds

Power-Gen Asia `98 _ billed Asia's largest electric power industry conference and exhibition _ is scheduled to open today at Pragati Maidan here. The three-day conference will focus on foreign investment opportunities in the power sector and exhibit state-of-art technology, equipment and expertise in the sector.

The event will also focus on Asian power trends, project structuring and finance, coal, natural gas and other liquid fuels. On the technology side, Power-Gen Asia `98 will have sessions on subjects like gas turbines, clean coal technologies, boiler and steam turbines, plant performance and maintenance management, etc.

The event is to be inaugurated by Vijay Kapoor, Lt. Governor of Delhi and will be attended by V K Pandit, secretary, ministry of power and John Christopher Brown, managing director of Singapore Powr International. The event is to be addressed by speakers from India, China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore.

 

According to the organisers, the event is expected to attract over 15,000 visitors. Douglas J Smith, programme director, Pennwell's Energy & Utility group said: "The 1998 event will be the largest vertical power exhibition presented in India. The event will bring professionals from throughout the world to discuss agrressive marketing strategies to build competitive advantage for the long term to improve the conditions in Asia."

Power-Gen first came to India in 1996 with over 300 exhibitors and over 11,000 business visitors attended the show. India has the second largest demand for power generation in the world with a need to add over 140,000 mw of new generation capacity costing a projected $140 billion between now and 2007, the release said.

"Today numerous power projects lie incomplete. The largest, Hopewell Holdings' $12.7 billion 10,560 mw coal-fired power plant, Enron's $2.5 billion 2184 mw Dabhol power project, Indo-Nepalese agreement for building Pancheswar Hydropower project on Mahakali river are to name just a few," it added.
