Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s son, Abhijit Mukherjee, today chose to tread on his father’s path with his introduction speech at the Congress office here, streaked with references to public sector units and the Nehruvian era.
Abhijit Mukherjee made his first public appearance today, as he was inducted a party worker before filing a nomination paper for the coming Assembly elections in West Bengal. He recently resigned from the post of general manager (corporate social responsibility) in Steel Authority of India, to take up a career in politics by contesting elections for the first time from his home district, Birbhum.
“I have been working in the CSR department of a public sector company, and wanted to carry forward the work,so I decided to contest the elections. In fact, public sector undertakings as an idea has been upheld since the time of Nehru,” said Abhijit Mukherjee in his speech here today.
Abhijit Mukherjee said he wanted to be “Aam Aadmi Ka Sipahi,” a concept popularised by Rahul Gandhi.
The state elections being round the corner, the political battle in West Bengal is heating up with the West Bengal Left Front Committee having announced its list of candidates yesterday. Trinamool and Congress are yet to arrive at a consensus on sharing seats.
