The private sector should induct better management strategies than the hire and fire policy prevalent in contractual labour, which would be a major problem in the next decade, urged Subesh Das, principal secretary to chief minister, government of West Bengal.
At an interactive seminar on HR management practices in the present economic scenario organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Das said, “Managing contractual workers will be a big problem in the next decade, there is a need for better management strategies to bring in stability in the economy. A balanced ratio between core and contractual workers needs to be maintained to ensure job and growth for all.”
There was a need for industry specific HR policies and not a generic one, he further urged.
Sabyasachi Sengupta, vice chancellor, West Bengal University of Technology said, “Apart from inculcating good HR policies, the industries should not treat the economic meltdown as a time for cutting down on headcount, instead, they should treat it as a time for manpower upgradation, for imparting training during this lean period, which will in the long run help to face global competition.” "We have taken this issue up with the national committee formed under the Knowledge Commission to impart training. In this area the industry as well as academia has a huge contribution to make," he added.
