Investigators probing the sources of donations received by several religious and political outfits in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday claimed to have established involvement of another religious organisation, Jammiat-ul-Ahledees (JUA) as a beneficiary during the height of militancy in the state.

Earlier, investigations into the alleged receipt of donations revealed Jammat-e-Islamia as one of the main beneficiaries.

Union home ministry sources said investigators have been able to establish a link between a cadre of JUA, Basheer Ahmed Madni, reported to be in Pakistan, and an alleged hawala conduit, Mohd Ali.

Investigators said Ali confessed during interrogation that he knew Madni and said he used to pass on donations to Madni after receiving the same from another hawala conduit, Thawar Hussain.

Mohd. Ali admitted knowing Thawar Hussain since 1987 and said at his (Hussain's) instance packets containing Indian currency notes were passed on to Madni, investigators said.

They said after the confession of Ali, Basheer Madni managed to give a slip and fled, reportedly to Pakistan. According to investigators, Thawar Hussain confessed that the money passed to Madni was received from Shambu Dayal Sharma alias Guptaji, an alleged hawala operator.

They said Hussain passed on Rs 10 lakh on two occasions to Madni at Sharma's instance.

The enforcement directorate have also chargesheeted both Mohd Ali and Thawar Hussain for violation of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1973 last year.

The directorate, in its chargesheet, alleged that Rs 30 lakh were disbursed by the accused from unauthorised channels.

We have been able to establish some links between the payments received by some organisations and various militant outfits, a senior home ministry official said.

He said the government is determined to unveil the recipt of alleged donations received from abroad.
