Though Gujarat announced its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) policy in July last year, not a single new SEZ has been developed in the state.

Also, there are no takers for the proposed SEZs in Dahej and Hazira.

The much-hyped Positra project, which was being developed by Gujarat Positra Port Infrastructure Ltd (GPPIL), and another project at Mundra, being developed by the Rs 4500 crore Adani Group, are also yet to reach the advanced stage.

The Adanis claim the company would focus on the project during the current fiscal year and 2004-05.

However, no GPPIL official was available for comment. Industrialist Nikhil Gandhi, who holds a majority stake in GPPIL, was also unreachable.

Minister of State for Industries, Anil Patel declined to comment on the SEZ issue. However, sources in the secretariat said there were no takers for the proposed SEZs in Dahej and Hazira because the projects are still in a nascent stage.

Chief minister Narendra Modi has directed top officials of the state industries department to act fast, they added.
