Continuous interference from politicians and bureaucrats in the operations of India's public sector units (PSUs) including aviation major, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has hampered their performance, maintained the first Indian in space, wing commander (retired), Rakesh Sharma at the third day of Confluence 2011 held at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA).
Sharma maintained that in order to improve efficiency of country's PSUs, including HAL the interference from bureaucrats and politicians needs to be reduced as they do not understand the process of manufacturing.
“Today MIG aircraft continue to hit grounds because PSUs in the country are run like political and bureaucratic fiefdom. The bureaucrats and politicians don't understand the process of manufacturing," said Sharma while delivering the address at the annual event at IIM-A on Sunday.
He further called for the need to introduce public private partnership (PPP) with Indian companies to improve efficiency and operations of the overall PSUs.Highlighting the plight of the performance of the publicly run research institutions, Sharma mentioned that the return to investment of DRDO was embarrassing.
