The Punjab Government has amended the Punjab Security of Land Tenures Act 1953 and the PEPSU Tenancy and Agricultural Land Act 1955, to give a sense of security to land owners who were earlier hesitant to lease out their lands for a long period.
According to an official spokesman, the Punjab Government has amended section 9(1), 9(A), 17 and 18 of the Punjab Security of Land Tenures Act 1953. He said that these amendments would ensure that tenancy would be for a fixed term. This would also ease the farmers to give their land on lease without any fear or risk. Besides the amendments would ensure the vacation of land by tenant as per the period mentioned in the agreement.
The amendments were suggested by the Punjab Governance Reforms Commission setup at the initiative of Sukhbir Singh Badal, deputy chief minister, to make the Revenue Act people friendly, the official informed.
The spokesman said that another historic amendment in section 8(B) has deleted the word ‘male’ from it, which was found discriminatory against the women since in the previous act there was no provision of tenancy for female descendants.
He said that with the amendment in section 8(B) deleting 'male' word from it, it would give equal right to male and female tenants. He said that Punjab government has taken these steps to promote investors for more investment in agriculture sector to provide maximum benefit to land owners.
