Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today urged Union Power Minister SushilKumar Shinde to advise the Nuclear Corporation of India to bear with the state government for the delay in the site selection process for a nuclear power project.
In a letter to the power minister, Badal told him he had already directed the chairman of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) to coordinate with the chairman and managing director of the corporation to pursue the matter further.
Badal pointed out that Punjab was a densely populated state and most of the area was under intensive cultivation, owing to which the whole exercise was taking some time.
He, however, said the state was very serious in finding a suitable site for setting up of a nuclear power plant in Punjab.
The chief minister added that the Ministry of Power was vigorously pursuing proposal to set up nuclear power stations in the country. “Even we are very keen on having a nuclear power station in the state and in pursuance of a letter received from Nuclear Power Corporation of India, we had already initiated the process of selection of a suitable site in the state,” wrote Badal.
