Punjab is gradually bracing itself to roam with seamless activity as the state awaits a WiMax facility.
Kuldeep Goyal chairman and managing director of state-owned BSNL said Punjab might be on the roadmap for WiMax inclusion in the next six months. Goyal was in Chandigarh last week to announce the launch of BSNL Blackberry services. BSNL has already rolled out its WiMax services from Gujarat .
The tenders for procurement of WiMax equipment had been floated in 2008 and officials from the Punjab BSNL circle said they were awaiting the equipment to roll out WiMax services in Punjab.
In the first phase, the circle would target customers who are outside the purview of broadband and then the broadband customers who want to graduate to WiMax, they said.
It may be mentioned that BSNL has received WiMax spectrum on preferential basis while the private players are waiting for auction for the spectrum allocation auction.
A recent report by Assocham reveals that the Indian market is expected to support 27.5 million WiMax users (about 19 million WiMax connections) by 2012.
