In order to give a push to the tourism sector in the state, the Punjab government signed an MoU with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to formulate a tourism development master plan for the state.

The proposed master plan is likely to take shape in seven months and will focus on heritage, culture, natural and medical tourism.

The project, which will result in a 15-year tourism development master plan for the period 2008-2023, will define tourism policy and strategy, identify tourism products and services and develop them in a sustainable manner.

"The project will also provide detailed short-term recommendations in respect of the tourism planning, education and training, marketing and promotion, environmental preservation and cultural conservation aspects related to tourism,"said the director of UNWTO Development Assistance Department, H Varma.
