Punjab warns polluting units

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) would now keep a close watch on effluent treatment plants of all industrial units along the banks of Buddha Nallah. It would also ensure that the units are adhering to pollution control norms.
 
Science and Technology Department Principal Secretary P Ram gave this information following a visit to the stretch along the Buddha Nallah beginning from Chamkaur Sahib till Jail Road.
 
The team found the facility for effluent treatment at Dhanansu Card Board Mill unsatisfactory. "We have directed the unit to either improve their infrastructure, or face action," said Ram.
 
Ram said the committee has also proposed to the Pollution Control to fit cameras within the units at the effluent treatment plant the units. However, sources said the proposal is unlikely to be implemented by the Pollution Board.
 
Also, the industries that dispose their effluents in Buddha Nallah have been given a deadline of May 31 to improve the infrastructure. The government has warned that the industries continuing with it beyond the date would be sealed.
 
Earlier, the municipal corporation had submitted a list of 52 dyeing units along the banks of Buddha Nallah discharging their effluents without any treatment.
