Quake jolts Maharashtra

Tremors, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, with epicentre near the quake-prone Koyna region rocked parts of Maharasthra, including Mumbai and Pune, in the afternoon prompting people to rush out of buildings in panic.

The epicentre of the quake was located at 17 degrees latitude and 74 degrees longitude in the quake-prone Koyna region, which includes Satara district.

According to the state government's disaster management cell, no casualties or damage to property have been  reported so far.

The tremors, which were felt around 3.17 pm, shook furniture and glass panes in buildings as people rushed out of buildings in fear.

Several high rises in south Mumbai and suburbs were evacuated temporarily after the tremors.

Mumbai fire brigade sources said there had been no distress calls after the tremors.
