The austerity drive in the Congress party might be tempered as Rahul Gandhi — the Special Protection Group-protected general secretary — has been asked not to travel by train anymore due to security concerns. Gandhi’s train was attacked as people pelted stones near Haryana’s Panipat on Tuesday when the Congress general secretary was returning from Chandigarh after attending a party meeting.

Gandhi was travelling in Swarna Shatabdi Express as part of the party’s austerity steps. “The austerity measures are necessary but security concerns are more important,” a senior Congress leader said on Wednesday.
