Reservation Bill to woo women electorates

Shiv Sena today criticised the controversial Women's Reservation Bill, saying it was introduced to reap political benefits and not for the welfare of women.

In an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Samana', the party said, "the hurriedly introduced bill is nothing but a sheer political hypocrisy which is meant to woo women electorates as assembly and Lok Sabha elections are round the corner."

"It is not that we are opposed to reservation for women. What we question is the timing and the motive with which the bill is introduced in the Rajya Sabha for political gains," it said.

The much-delayed Women's Reservation Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha yesterday marked by high voltage drama and unruly scenes in the House.

"At a time when atrocities against women are increasing, when rape and murder are taking place frequently, when minor girls are getting married off and when dowry deaths have become too common, what is needed is stern implementation of existing laws," the editorial added.
