A long drought, followed by near-absence of winter rain before last week, seems to have pulled down water levels in 91 major reservoirs across the country. Data from the Central Water Commission shows the total levels in these reservoirs at 45.8 billion cubic metres, 29 per cent of their total live storage.
This is 71 per cent of the storage of last year and 74 per cent of the 10-year average at this time. The problem is across all major regions, with the largest drop in southern and western India. The recent bout of rain would help a bit.
