Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) will build 27,000 houses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in the Chhattisgarh capital.
The housing project is part of the city modernisation scheme and to improve the quality of life of the poor people, Raipur Mayor Kiranmoyee Nayak said while presenting the Rs 880 crore annual budget of the civic body.
A sum of Rs 325 crore has been earmarked for the housing project, Nayak said, adding that other formalities including selection of site would be finalised soon.
Small houses with an area of less than 600 square feet under the RMC would be left out of the ambit of property tax. The revision in the property tax for commercial and residential purposes has come as a big jolt for traders.
Property tax on commercial buildings had been increased by more than three folds in the annual budget of Chhattisgarh's biggest municipal corporation. The traders paying Rs 4,112 per thousand square feet as property tax would now have to pay Rs 15,492.
