The pit is formed on Raja Rammohan Roy Road and it is 12 feet deep and covers an area of 80 sq ft. A waterpipe runs underneath it.

The hydraulic engineers and officials from water department of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai rushed to the spot immediately.

According to earth scientists from IIT, caving of earth below surface was common in those places where the land is reclaimed.

The subsurface soil which is below the tar road if affected by flow of water gives in and "there is nothing big about it", they said.
